The shape of the teeth, the course of the arch of the denture, the closure of the lower and upper set of teeth can affect not only the aesthetics but also the function. The resting position of the jaw joints and the jawbone at the time of the bite is determined only by harmonical position, articulatio of the the lower and upper occlusal surfaces of the teeth. Congested teeth can all be the cause of the asymmetrical, non-optimal position and movement of the jaw on extremely worn teeth. The resulting bite also forces the jaw joints into the wrong position when the teeth close, which can lead to pathological overload sooner or later. This problem can lead to pain and clicking in the jaw joint, or to the formation of a temporary lockjaw (trismus), moreover it can lead to further destruction of the teeth and tooth support structure.
Our nervous system tries to deduce and process the accumulation of everyday stress even while we are awake, but it does it most commonly at night, while sleeping. A significant increase in muscle tone is nearly always seen during this stage. It’s no different with the masticatory muscles. During sleep, the musculoskeletal system’s “control” seeks to locate the incorrect joint position, which displays as bruxism or pinching of the teeth. In this case, prolonged, very large forces occur, a multiple of the normal chewing force, which can cause symptoms in the general condition, such as headache, sleep disturbance, edema under the eyes, numbness during sleep, sweating, increased nocturnal urination, tired waking, and shoulder spasm, in addition to damaging the teeth and gums.
The goal of Gnathology is to map the incorrectly formed jaw joint position and then restore optimal jaw joint circumstances.
The first stage at our dental office is to use a computerized diagnostic (Cadiax) approach to record the lower jaw’s movement patterns, and then to construct a true, computer – aided design model of our patient’s “chewing organ.”
We do this with a dual purpose: The model is a diagnostic and therapeutic aid for the dentist and an essential source of information for the dental technician to design the perfect future denture.
The model is created using an individual value articulator (Gamma Dental Reference), which allows us to replicate the jaw joint features of our patient as closely as possible by individually configuring hundreds of parameters. As a result, we may gradually compensate for abnormal anatomical aberrations and detrimental displacements, bringing the mandible closer and closer to its proper spatial connection. In the mouth, the symmetrical, ideal new location discovered during our assessment is double-checked. We can begin therapy if the innervation of our patient’s muscles and joints readily “accepts” the new condition and feels comfortable and calming throughout the adaptation.
Depending on how severe or what the reason of the problem is, this might range from making a bite guard at night through orthodontics to even new dentures.
