Even today people underestimate the significance of gingival atrophy , in most cases they only see a dentist for help when the gravity of changes already reach a stage less treatable. Today, 70-75% of people exhibit a certain phase of gingival atrophy.
Gingival atrophy usually results painless changes, only mild symptoms can be seen for long. If people would pay attention to the early signs and would be aware of the real dangers of gingival atrophy, the vast majority of early thooth looseness could be prevented.
Gingival atrophy will eventually lead to loss of teeth, and further affects gums and bone structure, which later might complicate the realization of aesthetic, comfortable dentures or dental implants.
Initial gingival atrophy can be first diagnosed as inflammation of the surface of the gums but subsequently it reaches to deeper tissue, causing continuous bone destruction (parodoncium) surrounding roots.
Hidden and insidious, the process is going on beneath the surface for years, rarely accompanied by occasional gum bleeding. Often visible retraction of gums is minimal, however, the main problem is not the gum but the bone atrophy.
Athropy of the gums and due to their functional unity the subsequent athropy of the bone tissue occurs mostly in adult population.
The inflammation of the stabilizing apparatus of teeth (gums, root-fiber membrane system, bones) leads to tissue atrophy, and thus weakens the fix position of teeth.
The primary objective of our multi-step therapy is the termination of inflammation and its causes and later preserving an anti-inflammatory status. This is accomplished firstly by the removal of tartar under the surface of gums and the inflammed tissue surrounding teeth, secondly with the attainment of perfect oral hygiene.
Teeth moving freely are to be fixed or railed because growing mobility impair condition. In the different phases of regenerative therapy, bone grafting surgery may be necessary in many cases to achieve perfect aesthetic and functional reconstruction.
For those suffering from this disease, emphasis should be placed on the regular professional oral hygiene treatments and sanitary replacement treatments. Regular monitoring and development of perfect personal oral hygiene habits are also a must.
